Steven Holl

This competition winning design for THE NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART in Kansas, has the audience moving though the landscape and openings  that go through the existing museum, giving them new experiences all the time. They change as they move from one level to another, going in and outside.

The pockets of space I am designing in my Museum of Illusions will have a similar feel I hope, giving the audience an experience that is changing all the time as they walk through.

Daniel Rozen, "Weave Mirror"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ushJnQfjbF0&feature=player_embedded

The "Weave Mirror" has the unique ability to involve the viewer. It is an intriguing installation as it changes its image as the viewer moves around. I want to produce illusions that can be seen in many points of view whether the viewer is standing still, or moving around.

The elevation picture of "Light Studio"will help me to design the interior of my performance space, as I want to design pockets of space where the audience will stand and experience my museum of illusions.

IX Mirrors, Ron Gilad

Because of my interest in mirrors and how much they can create a narrative I have been looking at Pistoletto and Ron Gilad. Ron Gilad uses multi media to create a more 3D space.

Michelangelo Pistoletto

Pistoletto's mirror paintings were hugely successful in the 1960's and continue to be exhibited frequently today. He was hugely interested in self-portraiture, but when he began the Mirror Paintings he included the viewer in the painting too. This has been another great find for my research in to the performance project "Forgotten Space".

Model of Abbey Street, Bermondsey

This is the site for my performance space. I was drawn to this tunnel because of the vast Doric columns and railings that run alongside. It has a real atmosphere, and my first instinct was to use the theme of continuation, and create virtual spaces, and twist and curve what is there, maybe even duplicate what is there. If I develop this I can create a space of illusions for my audience.

Optical Illusions

These last two illusions I have found were inspired by Escher

Michelangelo

Michelangelo designed the Piazza del Campidoglio which plays with perspective and space. This effect can be seen from many places, whether you are in the air or standing in the square. I would like to create an effect like this in my performance space.

The Living City Exhibition 1963

This particular structure by Archigram, caught my eye because it seems small and compact with so many pockets of space. Yet when you go into the bubble, there is a whole world of things going on. Some of these images on the inside are distorted, as they may be curved or bent over the structure and therefore deceive the viewer.

Dan Graham

Dan Graham's glass and mirror installations have been an inspiration for two of my projects now.  His curved and elliptical structures create amazing illusions, which are made with two way glass and mirrors.  When looking at his work we are able to see both real and virtual spaces. For my project I want to create a space that will too have illusions, and this will be the performance.

The Unilever Series at Tate

Ai Weiwei's "Sunflower Seeds" involved hundreds of skilled workers and took years to complete. It almost became a way of life  in the Chinese city of Jingdezhen. I love that so many people took part, as it was also a source of income for the city that had less and less jobs on offer.
